I Am Rahab…The Kid Sister, Gomer

I Am Rahab…The Kid Sister, Gomer!

By JC Miller

No one wants to claim Gomer. She led a messy life. The truth is, she was an ordinary woman just like you and me. She was a mother, wife, sister, friend, and daughter―who also happened to be a prostitute. Life isn’t always pretty, especially when you’re from “the wrong side of the tracks.” Your character, and judgment thereof, become a reflection of that life. From my perspective of Gomer, you’ll find a young woman plagued by emotional trauma, generational curses, bad influences, and neglect. Gomer was unruly, disrespectful, immoral, and at times—downright nasty. Convinced that she didn’t deserve happiness, she was determined to follow the slippery slope of discontentment. Love was an interruption, a thorn in her side, an experience that sideswiped Gomer into caring about herself and the impact she made on others. In the existence of Gomer, we discover the intricate world of a soul lost and then found; and in it, an illustration of God’s love for mankind.

The story of Hosea and Gomer is not your typical love story. It’s not told with all the bells and whistles of a fairytale romance; instead, this story comes across as either a marriage gone completely wrong or a true love that endures over time. If you enjoy a good love story, this one is the real deal. God uses Hosea and Gomer’s relationship as a metaphorical picture of Himself loving mankind despite our sinful ways.

When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, he said to him, “Go, take to yourself an adulterous wife, and children of unfaithfulness…” Hosea obeyed God’s instruction and married Gomer.

Gomer was a promiscuous woman, a harlot, a whore. She married the prophet Hosea and conceived and bore children. Since Gomer was unfaithful it is possible that they were illegitimate children.

We can only imagine the drama that the prophet Hosea sustained, but he remained faithful to God throughout his suffering. It is hard to imagine that Hosea would even want to take Gomer back after she ran from him and their family, becoming a sacred sex slave in the temple of pagan gods. But, Hosea bought Gomer back from slavery with fifteen shekels of silver and about a homer and a lethek of barley.

Gomer, a sex trafficking survivor of the Bible, through slavery, undoubtedly learned how good life was with Hosea. Through Gomer, we too can learn that no matter how low we get, God’s love never ceases, and in Him, there’s always a home…because we are Rahab’s kid sister, Gomer, too!
