I Am Rahab…The Milk Crate Challenge of Life.
by JC Miller
I am sure we have all heard of the #milkcratechallenge by now; it is a video challenge made famous on #TikTok in August of this year. The challenge involves stacking milk crates into a structure that resembles a podium, with both sides functioning as stairs. The participant is expected to climb up to the top of the containers then back down the other side without destroying the structure or falling, risking injury. Here is where it goes sideways; the anticipation of bodily harm is the slapstick comedy that has made this challenge viral. This activity has faced criticism by health professionals for its unnecessary risk to personal health. Yet many are repeatedly lining up, like Wile E. Coyote, attempting to conquer the podium of broken bones. Such is life.
As we climb the ladder of success or attempt to saddle life, many have fallen. Society constantly tells us to get back up and try again. I am sure someone is sitting around laughing right now, enjoying the comedy of our mishaps. The question is not, what is the joy in failure? Instead, is the reward worth the try? And, the answer is always a resounding YES!
The desire to divide and conquer the obstacles of life is an innate coding programmed by the Almighty. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
Life is tough, but like Tonka, we are built to last. Of course, the milk crate challenge is silly, to say the least, and not worth the injury, but the pursuit of happiness and the want for success in life is altogether worth the mental anguish. After all, What does not kill us makes us stronger, right? Look at Matthew chapter 4. Here we see that even Jesus went through a confusing (not for Him obviously) time of testing before His earthly ministry began. He was led into the desert to be tempted by Satan. Jesus could have stopped this experience from occurring. He didn’t. He knew the value of going through something difficult and coming out the other side with a stronger faith, a more vital spirit, and some wisdom that will guide us in the future.
If we could help it, the obstacles in life would be chosen or maneuvered carefully through without the possibility of harm, but, as it is, living is hard work. As we tread lightly, the steps of life, step by wiggling step, remember – we’re all going to face challenges. It is only in the process of overcoming them that we grow as people.
